Smark Hen-XT (05/27/15): The Kevin Owens Show

This week on NXT, Kevin Owens runs the whole show,  Alexa Bliss heels it up, and matches! Let’s get right down to it.

The Champ Is Here

NXT Champion Kevin Owens is a wrestling god, but you probably already knew that. The guy has the moves, the mic skills, and the charisma that turn talents into superstars. And this week, NXT continues to shows us why.

Let’s start off with the opening promo. From the moment the he walks out to Sami Zayns’ entrance music to the way he plays the crowd for suddenly backing him up after booing him last week, and finally to the way threatens Solomon Crowe after being challenged to a match, Owens’s presence dominates the ring. A lot of the things he does are understated, so nuanced, that it takes a keen observer to really appreciate just how good he is at what he does. He doesn’t have to scream. He doesn’t have to be over the top. He comes off as a regular family man doing what he can to provide for his family. Perfect psycho killer cover story.

The main event itself was nothing but a glorified squash match. That comes to no surprise. The post-match beat down was interrupted by everyone’s better liked Samoan named Joe. The way Owens goads Joe to enter the ring, then escapes is a typical heel move, but he really just puts it at a whole new level when he tells Joe that he should have stayed in oblivion. It’s the little things that make him awesome.

The rest of the show:

Bayley vs. Emma

  • Good showing from the divas tonight. In the short time they had to work the match, it was filled to the brim. Emma breaks out the Muta Lock for the victory. The post-match beat down was not as good though.

  • I’m still a bit confused as to why they're continuing the feud between the two women’s teams. Unless they're planning to use this as a springboard for the next Women's Championship #1 contender, who I'm guessing either has to be Bayley or Emma at this point, I'm not really buying into this feud any more.

NXT Tag Team Champs Blake and Murphy (with Alexa Bliss) vs. Elias Sampson and Mike Rawlis

  • At some point, someone will have to complain about the seizure-inducing entrance of the Tag champs, Slowing the down the song's tempo didn’t help. The champs are doing a great job working as heels. The Sparkle Splash (boy, they got to give that a new name) after the match from Bliss is a nice touch.

  • Just a little side comment, but Corey Graves's comment after the match about Bliss liking sparkly things and the Tag titles being shiny makes enough sense to justify a heel turn. It's comments like those that makes Graves one of the better color commentator. Also, it makes Bliss go from adobrz cheerleader-esque character, to evil—but still adobrz—cheerleader-esque character who hangs out with the entitled jocks. Give the champs Letterman jackets and we'll probably have a really good gimmick there.

Finn Balor vs Tye Dillinger

  • Balor wins. Nothing much, really.

  • I’m more interested in the backstage segment with Dillinger's old partner, Jason Jordan. I smell a Shoot Nation debut coming.

The show was great as a study on how awesome Kevin Owens is, but as for the whole thing, it was decent. After last week's Takeover special, though, the expectations are rising for the brand. "Decent" shouldn't be good enough. With a lot of new viewers coming in, and a lot of the older hardcore fans drumming up more interest, they should do a lot more to round up the whole show. Owens is gold and Joe on WWE television is awesome, but that shouldn't mean they should put all their eggs in one basket.
