#ThrowbackThursday: The Day Christian (and the IWC) Lost

The date was May 6, 2011. Newly-crowned World Heavyweight Champion Christian came out on SmackDown! to celebrate his win over Alberto Del Rio at Extreme Rules in a Ladder Match to succeed his best friend Edge as the champion.

During the show, a poll was held in which the WWE Universe voted for Randy Orton to be the new number one contender, and a title match was scheduled for that very night. Orton and Christian put out a great match, but Orton was booked to win the World Heavyweight Championship as the internet wrestling community (IWC) collectively lost its shit and unleashed a large amount of vitriol against the WWE Creative Team and Randy Orton.

This would lead to an underrated feud between Orton and Christian, who would go on to turn heel for the first time since 2005. Christian would have two unsuccessful attempts at recapturing the title at the next two pay-per-views (Over the Limit and Capitol Punishment), until he eventually beat Orton via DQ at Money in the Bank 2011. That match included a stipulation in which the World Heavyweight Championship could switch hands via disqualification.

Christian would drop the title at SummerSlam 2011 in a No Holds Barred match. The feud ended on the August 30 edition of SmackDown! in a Steel Cage match, which Christian ultimately lost.
