The Grapevine (12/14/15): That Awkward Moment When You Look Like A Shooter

Good morning, everyone! Welcome to the Grapevine, where we round up the (technically unconfirmed) rumors from the wild world of pro wrestling that you may have missed over the evening.

We've got good news on the non-WWE front, and some ridiculous news on the WWE front:

  • WWE is considering changing Roman Reigns's appearance due to the recent slew of mass shootings and terrorist attacks. The concern is that Roman's SWAT-inspired look might be traumatic considering he's a guy dressed up in tactical gear walking into a crowd. Vince McMahon is against the idea as he doesn't agree with the correlation, but the idea was brought up again after the recent shooting in San Bernardino, California. Those against the idea believe that the fans are already very familiar with Roman's look, and Vince believes that changing his look while in the middle of making him a top star wouldn't be a good idea. The company is taking a wait-and-see approach at the moment. (Source: AllWrestlingNews)

We say: First of all, this sounds ridiculously sketchy.

Second of all, we agree with Vince and those against the idea that at this point, Reigns's tactical gear had been very well-established long before this recent crop of shootings happened, and it shouldn't trigger anyone who comes to a WWE show expecting to see Reigns at all.

Third, we disagree with Vince's point about changing his look—sometimes, you do need to change someone's appearance to make him a star. For all we know, that could be the last push the guy needs in order to connect.

Fourth, we hate shooters for ruining nice things.

  • While we're on the subject of Roman Reigns, apparently the "tater tots" line from his promo last week on RAW was highly intentional. As in "the WWE wanted the fans to chant 'tater tots'" intentional. The line received near-unanimous flak from both fans and people in the business, but Roman's longwinded promo was scripted to build up to that line. (Source: WON)

We say: What will it take for Vince to relinquish control of creative already?

  • Looks like AJ Styles is cleared to work both Final Battle this Friday and Wrestle Kingdom 10 on January 4. Styles, who suffered an injury back in October and had to be pulled from the recently-concluded World Tag League, is trying to rehab the injury with DDP Yoga. (Source: Top Rope Press, WrestlingInc)

We say: Glad to hear he's pushing through with both events, as we wouldn't want to miss the big-time matchup against Nakamura. We just hope he doesn't push it so much.

What do you think? Should Reigns change his look? Objectively, will he trigger any PTSD? How should the rest of WWE go about a mutiny against Vince? Let us know what you think in the comments!
