#ThemeSongTuesday (12/22/15): The Year of the Rising Sun

Whether we were naughty or nice, PWR: Terminus gave us pinoy wrestling fans quite a handful of early Christmas gifts. Between the Hair vs. Mask All Out War between Mark D. Manalo and The Apocalypse or the beautiful chaotic mess that was the Path of Gold tournament, those who braved the rain and heavy traffic caused by Typhoon Nona were treated to one helluva year-ender.

The defining moment, however, came at the end of the night when crowd-favorite Ralph Imabayashi defeated “Classical” Bryan Leo for the PWR Championship. This week on #ThemeSongTuesday, we’ve got the Filipino-Japanese sensation and your new PWR Champion: Ralph Imabayashi!

Much like Vintendo’s theme — and every other PWR theme — Ralph Imabayashi’s was composed by Wacky Acosta. Aptly titled “Fighting Spirit”, the track sonically introduces us to Imabayashi’s neverending intensity. Quick on his feet, the Filo beast from the east operates in the ring like a homing missile. He sets his target, and doesn’t rest until this target is taken out. He’s done just that with Peter Versoza. He's done that with John Sebastian. He’s done that with CBL. He set his target on the championship, and look where he is now. “Fighting Spirit” progresses the same way, using lightning fast guitar licks topped with a traditional Japanese “Koto” to capture his spunky persona and pay respects to his eastern roots.

Listening to the song’s intro again honestly gives me finger-straining flashbacks to Guitar Hero III, when beating “Through the Fire and Flames” by Dragonforce perfectly on expert was about the coolest thing you could do (Alright, maybe we had different definitions of “cool” growing up). Now, should the new champ have a new theme to go along with that belt? We’re gonna go ahead and say nah, since “Fighting Spirit” serves Imbamayashi well as a theme song for now. Having him come out to a shamisen would be pretty sick in the future, though.

I was introduced to Ralph Imabayashi at PWR: Live! in August, when he went head to head against the party animal Peter Versoza in a match so great that it ended up featured in Smark Henry’s 31 Days of Wrestling! That match solidified my love for the Philippine Wrestling Revolution, and I haven’t missed a show since. Imabayashi now stands at the top of the roster, representing the Land of the Rising Sun. Well, the storm is over and the sun has risen, Revo-nation. Wake up and feel the sunshine.
