SmackDown Rundown (1/28/16): On Highlights, Underdogs, and Phenomenal Ones

Welcome to this week’s SmackDown Rundown! No Ricky this week because he got lost somewhere in our boiler room while he was celebrating AJ Styles’ SmackDown debut, so it’s your boy Stan Sy filling in.

The blue brand’s been a lot of fun since 2016 began, but it’s still quite a way’s away from the peak it achieved in the early 2000s. Nonetheless, it’s nice to know that SmackDown isn’t as much of an afterthought as it used to be. This week, we got a monster 6-man tag team main event, a YOU-nited States Championship match, and a phenomenal debut, so let’s jump right in!

Chaos Engulfs the Highlight Reel
Chris Jericho hosted the Highlight Reel on SmackDown and had Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose as his guests. They chatted about the #1 Contender’s match in the main event of Fastlane, and Jericho tried to amplify the tension that will surely come between Roman and Deano. As they began to shift the focus to Brock Lesnar, the third man in that Fastlane main event, Bray Wyatt and his family made t…

Now while we have been in the midst of an immense #Markdown week in wrestling, we find ourself mere days away from Philippine Wrestling Revolution's 2016 kickoff show with PWR Live: Road to Vendetta happening on January 31st!

With big developments from the last show of Terminus, we are expecting a whole lotta tsuuus, meayows, along with hard-hitting and slobber-knocking in-ring action from vengeful bitch-killers, product orientations, and returning champions, Truly, it gets better as it ages as this fourth installment of PWR Live has a lot in store for the Revo-nation!

With a stacked card from top to bottom, there is definitely a lot to look forward to, especially with a lineup stacked with potential highlights and show-stealers from budding PWR stars and their respective top moves.…

Smark Hen-XT (1/27/16): Ménage à Trois

This week on NXT, three of the brand’s top dogs got it on for the right to face the Demon. Also on deck, the newly named American Alpha went after another pair of former NXT Tag Team Champions.

Ménage à Trois
NXT has been building up to this match and, boy, did it deliver. Not that I thought it wouldn’t; it would be impossible for this to not be great considering everyone involved. Sami Zayn, Baron Corbin, and Samoa Joe have all been on a roll, but triple threat matches aren’t always the most entertaining matches. Once again, though, NXT’s creative found a way to make this more fun that it should be.

The action was non-stop and every move was crisp. Zayn played the part of the underdog well, selling Corbin’s and Joe’s offense like a boss. Joe was the monster punching everyone in the face. Seeing Corbin unglued was brilliant, and having that cost him the match was great storytelling.

The finish was interesting since TakeOver: Dallas is still two months away; and this gives both Zayn an…

The Grapevine (1/29/16): Anger Management

Good morning everyone, and welcome to the Grapevine! This is our daily post rounding up all the interesting rumors from the wild, wild world of pro wrestling that you may have missed over the evening.

We have some saddening/maddening news on Daniel Bryan's return:

Daniel Bryan has apparently been told outright that he won't ever be cleared by the WWE to return. Even though two third-party neurologists have already cleared him, he still needs to be cleared by Dr. Joseph Maroon to work. Several other wrestlers were expecting him to return at Royal Rumble, which obviously didn't pan out. WWE has been offering him non-wrestling roles instead, and Bryan tried to argue his case to Vince, who refused to budge. (Source: WON)
We say: More fodder for the conspiracy theory of WWE holding Bryan down because they either don't like him or don't want him to ruin any plans, but keeping him hostage so that he won't go anywhere else. When was the last time you ever heard of a wre…

Temple Rants (1/27/16): Welcome Home

Last week, we spent time looking at what Lucha Underground’s second season has in store. Well, we’re finally here: the Temple is back! It’s been a painful 6 months without this show, so let’s dive into it!

We kick things off at what looks like a mental facility, where Vampiro is being interviewed. The doctor tells him it’s graduation time, and we learn that Vampiro has been committed here since the events of Ultima Lucha. After some violent delusions, they allow Vampiro to check out. He’s picked up by his broadcast buddy Matt Striker, as the two head back to the Temple, which Matt says has become a “darker place”.

Vampiro hears voices in his head. They counsel him, they understand.
This is a brilliant way to allow Vampiro to slide back in as commentator, as it would be weird if he just showed up all normal after his Cero Miedo match with Pentagon. Treating it as some form of delusion or illness allows us to keep Vampiro as Ian Hodgkinson, while giving us the possibility of Vampiro rel…

The NXT Grapevine: Road to Takeover: Dallas

Good morning, Henrinites! We've got more spoilers for upcoming episodes of NXT, covering the episodes leading up to NXT Takeover: Dallas! As usual, we're putting a quick WARNING here: if you don't want to be spoiled, turn back now. Otherwise, read on!

March 9: #1 Contender's 2 Out of 3 Falls Match for the NXT Championship: Samoa Joe def. Sami Zayn - Joe picked up the first fall via the Muscle Buster - Zayn picked up the second fall via the Koji Clutch submission - Joe picked up the third fall and the match via the Coquina Clutch
Thoughts: ALL NIGHT LONG! Yes, This episode is just one match long, and it definitely looks amazing. Joe vs. Zayn going at it for an hour should make for must-see television, and this looks like the kind of match we'll be talking about as a Match of the Year candidate. Put this on your calendars, folks.
Also, one more date to put on your calendars: Samoa Joe vs. Finn Balor for the NXT Championship at NXT Takeover: Dallas!

March 16: Hype Bros (Z…

Lucha Underground Results (1/27/16)

Welcome to the season 2 premier of Lucha Underground, Henrinites!

Vampiro kicks off the show in a hospital, having been admitted since Ultima Lucha to treat his delusions. Matt Striker arrives and picks Vampiro up to bring him to the Temple.

Catrina is now proprietor of Lucha Underground, as Dario Cueto is still MIA. Fenix talks with Catrina and demands that he be given his title short now, but Catrina makes him wait. She says that Fenix will get his title shot next week, if he can successfully defend his Gift of the Gods Championship against King Cuerno tonight.

We see Mil Muertes sitting on a throne atop the Lucha Underground Temple.

Gift of the Gods Championship Match: King Cuerno def. Fenix (c) to become the new Gift of the Gods Champion
Ivelisse, Angelico and Son of Havoc meet with Catrina to demand a shot at the Trios Championship. She informs them that Mil Muertes has other plans for them, and books them in a Triple Threat match to determine the #1 Contender for the Lucha Undergrou…

The Grapevine (1/28/16): Catching Bullets

Good morning everyone, and welcome to the Grapevine! This is our daily post rounding up all the interesting rumors from the wild, wild world of pro wrestling that you may have missed over the evening.

After the titanic news of Shinsuke Nakamura debuting at TakeOver: Dallas (watch out for the NXT Grapevine later today), we have news on the rest of the Bullet Club:

It seems like Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows are headed straight for the main roster. It was previously rumored that they'd be headed to NXT, possibly to support Finn Balor in a Balor Club. They have not signed deals yet, but it seems to be a sure thing that those deals would be for the main show. (Source: PWInsider)
We say: Seems like a damned fine idea, seeing as the New Day has already run out of challengers in their division. Between Shinsuke coming to NXT and this, we can't wait!

Regarding Triple H's involvement in EVOLVE, apparently the two sides are still talking and negotiating as to what the partnership will…

The Smark Henry RAW Report (1/25/16): You and Me Got a Whole Lot of History

This week’s RAW felt a lot like Old School RAW, the special episodes that RAW would air as if it were 1993 all over again, complete with special appearances by former wrestlers from the old days. In some cases, certain talent from the current roster like Mark Henry would come out to their old entrance themes and videos just for funnies. In many ways, this week’s RAW was a throwback to the past minus all the shenanigans.

One of the featured matches of the night was Chris Jericho vs. AJ Styles. Who would have thought that we would see this match on RAW in 2016? The show also started with a 20-minute Authority segment with Triple H as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. And then you had the Rock coming out to do his schtick by making creepy jokes towards Lana, and dropping weed and penis jokes on live TV. You also got the return of Tourette’s Syndrome Goldust, who asked R-Truth to be his partner, with the latter assuming that Goldust was asking for a homosexual relationship.

The rash of i…
