The Grapevine (2/24/16): Did Someone Say Brand Split?

Good morning everyone, and welcome to the Grapevine! This is our daily post rounding up all the interesting rumors from the wild, wild world of pro wrestling that you may have missed over the evening.

We might have the biggest news of the year since NJPW saw its exodus:

  • There is talk of bringing the brand split back to the WWE. The format, which was last in effect from 2002 to 2011, might be the overall result of Shane McMahon's return to the WWE. The speculation goes that if Shane McMahon somehow beats the Undertaker at WrestleMania, he will gain control of RAW, while Triple H will take control of SmackDown, in which he could possibly call up NXT talents to use. We say: Okay, we have to calm ourselves down for this, but BRAND SPLIT! This might be the easiest direction to go with the stipulation of Shane and Vince fighting for the rights to RAW, and all the signs are pointing that way, so this is why we have to collect ourselves and not get our hopes up too high. But the possibilities are endless when it happens, and if the WWE still manages to fuck this one up, then we don't know anymore.

  • Although Batista has been approached for a possible WrestleMania appearance this year, Goldberg has not been asked. The former World Heavyweight Champion, has expressed an interest in making an appearance if talks go well. (Source: F4WOnline)

We say: Well... thanks for the non-update?

  • WWE has apparently switched the order of Payback and Extreme Rules this year. The Prudential Center in New Jersey is listing Extreme Rules as May 22 instead of Payback, and the latter is nowhere to be found on their page. However, WWE has come out with new promotional materials for the show, for which tickets will be going on sale this week. Extreme Rules was announced for April 24, but without a venue. We say: Honestly? Get rid of all the themed PPVs (yes, maybe even Survivor Series) except for Royal Rumble and bring back all the end of the world PPVs. We miss Judgment Day, Armageddon, and even Backlash. (Because Payback is the exact same thing as Backlash.)

What do you think? Do you want the brand split back? How would you draft a new brand extension? Let us know what you think in the comments!
