The Grapevine (2/9/16): #DanielBryanDone

Good morning everyone, and welcome to the Grapevine! This is our daily post rounding up all the interesting rumors from the wild, wild world of pro wrestling that you may have missed over the evening.

Looks like RAW's about to get a little more positive sad today:

  • Daniel Bryan is apparently set for RAW tonight. You'll probably already have heard of this by the time you read this as photos on the Internet spread pretty fast, but he was seen at the airport in Phoenix headed to Seattle, where the show will be this week. It turns out that he is seemingly booked on the show. He has also cut his signature long hair and beard for reasons yet unknown retiring.

Apparently, Bryan tried to give his notice to WWE recently, but was blocked on legal grounds stemming from the terms of his contract; to be specific, because there are no terms providing a wrestler the right to give his notice, if Bryan's contract is anything like this publicly-available WWE contract template. If this is the case, then even though it's not fair to Bryan, that was a right he signed away when he signed a deal with the WWE.

As we reported previously, WWE had been offering Bryan non-wrestling roles within the company, which he had been turning down. (Source: PWInsider, Dave Meltzer, Cageside Seats)

We say: Let's break this down into two parts.

First, it looks like Bryan's booking on RAW is legit. Although the timing could be suspect for Bryan visiting either his family or backstage in his hometown, or both, we're inclined to trust PWInsider's intel a little here. The good thing is that even if the rumors that he's definitely set turn out to be false, it's possible that he could be going to RAW to try and bargain one last time. Let's hope it doesn't have to go the way of CM Punk leaving the company a couple of years ago.

Second of all, the story of WWE blocking his attempt to give notice seems a little shaky, even if it's plausible. WWE has every reason to block him from going elsewhere and enriching a rival promotion's talent, but we have a feeling that it's more complex than that. If Bryan's making his way to RAW right now, then it's probably because they found a way to break the impasse, and not because they chose to simply block him giving notice. (And we're pretty sure other wrestlers have been able to give notice, but we need to do some more research on that.)

Daniel Bryan is retiring.

  • Braun Strowman is apparently better than we see on TV, which is why Vince McMahon is pretty high on him when it comes to his creative plans. Strowman's entire presentation is coming completely from Vince, who wants to save his improving skills for a big stage such as WrestleMania. Multiple sources can apparently attest to Strowman's improvement. It's also possible that the plans for Strowman vs. Undertaker have been changed following online backlash toward the rumors. (Source: PWInsider)

We say: We can give the benefit of the doubt to people saying that Strowman is better than most people can see, because that's a thing that's believable. The guy rarely wrestles on TV, anyway. But if you're going to try and build hype for such a monumental match on the biggest show of the year, you're gonna have to start playing your cards more. It should be obvious by now that no one's going to get hyped with a guy they think can't work.

  • Regarding Alberto del Rio's reported back injury, it's said that he's injured, but is good enough to go. The injury, which he sustained taking a suplex from Brock Lesnar at either the Royal Rumble match or the Jan. 18 episode of RAW, isn't going to sideline him from his scheduled rematch with Kalisto at Fastlane. (Source: WON)

We say: It's great that he's not too injured to work, but the paradox is if he continues to work, he's most likely going to end up too injured to work. Something REALLY has to change.

What do you think? Do you believe all the conspiracy theories surrounding Daniel Bryan and the WWE? Do you think Strowman has the potential to be better than he is? Let us know what you think in the comments!
