The NXT Grapevine: May 2016

It's the end of another month, and you know what that means, NXT fans—there's a whole new series of episodes taped for May! You might have already seen the big surprises and the happenings going around, but we're here to process them all just for you.

May 4

  • Eric Young debuts by interrupting a Samoa Joe promo, promising to bring change

  • Nia Jax def. Tessa Blanchard

  • Austin Aries def. Tye Dillinger

  • The Revival def. The Hype Bros

  • No Way Jose def. Noah Kekoah

  • Samoa Joe def. Eric Young in a non-title match

Thoughts: It's official, guys, NXT has become Impact Wrestling. If you hadn't seen it before (with the arrival of Joe and Austin Aries), Finn's loss, Joe's reign, Roode's pending signing, and the debut of EY have cemented it. I don't believe the homegrown Performance Center talent will be completely overshadowed by the ex-TNA talent, but their fate will be determined by how Triple H and Vince McMahon handle NXT. It's also interesting to see Eric Young immediately come in against a top name and lose when almost every indy star signee gets to have a good win against a lesser wrestler.

May 11

  • Finn Balor returns, is confronted by Elias Samson

  • American Alpha def. John Skyler and Corey Hollis in a non-title match

  • Shinsuke Nakamura def. Alex Riley

  • Alexa Bliss def. Rachael Ellering

  • Finn Balor def. Elias Samson. Balor demands a rematch for the title, and Samoa Joe jumps him. William Regal announces Finn Balor vs. Samoa Joe for the title at NXT Takeover on June 8.

Thoughts: We know a lot of you are probably cringing at the thought of yet another Balor/Joe match, but at this point you have to give this one to them. Finn does have a rematch clause, after all. We just can't wait to have the other guys finally get into the title picture.

May 18

  • Asuka def. Adrienne Reese in a non-title match

  • The team of Austin Aries and Shinsuke Nakamura def. Blake and Murphy. Nakamura and Aries are teasing a feud with each other after Nakamura didn't tag Aries in and stole the win.

  • Carmella def. Peyton Royce

  • The team of Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano def. Danny Birch and Rob Ryzin

  • Nia Jax def. Bayley

  • American Alpha def. The Revival in a non-title match

Thoughts: Seems like there's going to be another set of tapings within the next couple of weeks because this is just until the middle of the month. The Nakamura/Aries angle definitely looks interesting, and should be a shocker to any casual fan (and to most fans, really) who think Nakamura is a celebrated babyface hero over in Japan. In his awesomeness, people tend to forget that the real Shinskay character is a bit of a self-centered scoundrel.

What do you think? Are you excited for Eric Young in the building? For another Joe/Balor match? What about Aries vs. Nakamura? Let us know what you think in the comments!
