The NXT Grapevine: May 25 & June 1

NXT Takeover: Revenge is happening in three weeks, and NXT just realized that it doesn't have enough episodes to bridge next week until then

May 25

  • William Regal announces a triple threat match among Carmella, Alexa Bliss, and Nia Jax for the #1 contendership to Asuka's Women's Championship later tonight, after Bayley wasn't medically cleared to compete.

  • The team of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa def. TM61, the team formerly known as The Mighty Don't Kneel

  • Austin Aries and Shinsuke Nakamura have a confrontation about the NXT Championship. William Regal makes Aries vs. Nakamura official for Takeover: Revenge.

  • No Way Jose def. Johnny Vandal

  • Nia Jax def. Alexa Bliss and Carmella in a triple threat match to become the new #1 contender to the Women's Championship. Asuka came out for a staredown.

Thoughts: No matter how lackluster the usual weekly NXT programming is, they always find a way to turn it up at the very last minute. While Nia Jax/Asuka isn't the fire matchup we wanted in the Women's division, Aries/Nakamura more than makes up for the upper midcard. We hope it's just as good as, if not better than, Zayn/Nakamura. Let this be the new #FightForever.

Also, TM61? We get the country code reference, but they couldn't have come up with a better name?

June 1

  • Gargano and Ciampa interrupt a Revival promo about the Tag Team Championships. The segment eventually devolves into Gargano and Ciampa dropkicking the Revival.

  • Tye Dillinger def. Murphy

  • Austin Aries def. Elias Samson

  • Contract signing segment between Nia Jax and Asuka, which ends with Nia powerbombing Asuka.

  • The team of Gargano and Ciampa def. The Revival. The Revival beat them down, but American Alpha hits the ring and a brawl breaks out between the two teams.

Thoughts: Looks like the rematch for the tag titles is official, and that rounds out a stacked (if not a little small) Takeover: Revenge card. So far we've got the tag titles on the line, Aries/Nakamura, Nia Jax/Asuka, and Balor/Joe 123125123. Looks like there wasn't any time to add a filler match, but that's actually a good thing—even though we can think of a throwaway singles match involving No Way Jose or Tye Dillinger or something, the minutes these matches will have to play out and just go should make up for the lack of real build for most of them.

What do you think of these tapings, and the Takeover: Revenge card? Let us know what you think in the comments!
