Oh, It's True: WWE Returns To Manila This September

It's finally official.

The whole Philippine wrestling community was abuzz after an over-eager webmaster at an online ticket portal accidentally jumped the gun and prematurely announced the WWE's upcoming Manila show, before promptly taking it back down.

Some of you weren't fazed by that fiasco, but for those of you who've been doubting, we're here to set the record straight. To quote Kurt Angle (who is not part of this tour, trust us): it's true. It's damn true. After a seven year wait, the WWE is returning to the Philippines for a massive one-night-only live performance.

The WWE announced via various news sites and social media that it will be returning to Manila on Friday, September 9 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, where several of the greatest talents in pro wrestling today will be competing before 16,000 rowdy local wrestling fans.

While no official card has been announced, the Superstars featured on the marketing materials should be enough to get local fans salivating at potential match-ups between the likes of reigning WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns, AJ Styles, current WWE Tag Team Champions the New Day, WWE Women's Champion Charlotte, Kevin Owens, Alberto Del Rio, Kane, and Sasha Banks, while other names like Neville, Tyler Breeze, Bo Dallas, and Zack Ryder should be making an appearance as well. (However, it should be noted that according to their site, WWE has a London tour scheduled for September 7, so it's highly likely that they're sending over a split roster.)

In an official statement issued through Gerrit Meier, WWE's President for International Events, the promotion said:

“WWE is excited to return to the Philippines, giving WWE’s passionate fans the chance to see their favorite Superstars in an energetic, larger-than-life event, for the first time in seven years. WWE Live Manila will deliver the same non-stop action and family fun that fans know and love from our TV programs on FOX Philippines and WWE Network.”

This is going to be a massive event sure to draw members of the WWE Universe from all over Southeast Asia, as the show is purportedly the only one to be held in the region this year.

The last time the WWE was in the Philippines, it featured the SmackDown and ECW rosters, with Jeff Hardy challenging then-World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk for his gold, Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio squaring off for the Intercontinental Champion, and a Triple Threat between Tommy Dreamer, Christian, and Jack Swagger for the ECW Championship.

This year's staging could potentially be even more intense, depending on where WWE storylines are this September.

Tickets will be available starting Friday, June 3, 2016 with three possible methods for purchase:

  • Online purchase via the SM Tickets website
  • Calling through the SM Tickets Customer Hotline at +63 2 470 2222

  • Upper box: PHP3,000 ($64)
  • Lower box: PHP8,000 ($171)
