#1 Contendership Match Announced For PWR Live: The ShawDown

From careers to championship shots—these two are going to go at it again.

Fresh off a historic clash at Wrevolution X, Chris Panzer and John Sebastian are set to go one-on-one once more when PWR takes its act to Shaw Boulevard for PWR Live: The ShawDown. Their match last May was amazing, so the powers that be have decided to put #1 Contender status for the PWR Championship up for grabs between these two.

Tale of the Tape

John Sebastian

Height: 5'10"
Weight: 195 pounds
Hometown: Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa
Championships & accomplishments: Promoted to Ace of the Royal Flush
Win-loss record: 7-5
Streak: Four-match winning streak
Finishing move: Killshot (running knee strike)

It's been a crazy 2016 so far for John Sebastian.

The Ace of the Royal Flush has been undefeated—yes, you read that right—this year so far. In other words, he's doing exactly what an ace should be doing. Despite the shining record, though, this is still the same John Sebastian we've known from the start. He's still your cocky, arrogant upstart with the annoying voice, except now he's got the results to back it up. Thank the Royal Flush for this turn in fortune, as it seems that being under the tutelage of "Classical" Bryan Leo is paying off huge dividends.

Thus, he heads into PWR Live: The ShawDown with some well-earned swagger. He's red-hot heading into the midyear, and anyone even thinking of challenging him should probably think twice.

Chris Panzer

Height: 5'9"
Weight: 175 pounds
Hometown: Detroit, Michigan
Championships & accomplishments: Former #1 Contender for the Malaysia Pro Wrestling (MyPW) World to Regional Championship
Win-loss record: 5-7
Streak: Three-match losing streak
Finishing moves: Panzerschreck (bicycle kick), Frog Splash

Once again, standing across Sebastian will be the Fil-Am sensation, Chris Panzer. Unfortunately, he's gone the opposite route that the Royal Flush loudmouth has.

Panzer has actually had one of the biggest opportunities a Filipino wrestler has had this year when he flew to Malaysia to challenge local hero Shaukat for the MyPWR Regional Championship. Since flying back home, he hasn't shaken off that losing streak. He came up short once again in a triple threat match against Bombay Suarez and Ken Warren for the PHX Championship, before losing a tag team match against the Royal Flush due to some communication problems from then-teammates Jake De Leon and Ralph Imabayashi. Most recently, of course, Panzer lost to John Sebastian in a high-stakes singles match—one that resulted in the, uh, Sysante of then-PWR GM Mr. Sy.

Overall edge: This seems like a slam dunk point for John Sebastian. He's been winning, while Chris Panzer has been losing. As Scott Steiner would probably say, "The numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster for Chris Panzer."

The History

When Panzer returned from a losing effort in Malaysia, he was immediately set upon by the Ace of the Royal Flush. At PWR Live: Manila Madness, Sebastian provided the fatal distraction that took Panzer out of the match. At that time, we knew we were in for a treat as these two stars started a rivalry. What we didn't know was just how insane it would be.

The two would end up being caught in the crossfire between Mr. Sy and local celebrity Pinoy Cesaro KC Montero, when the former PWR GM made an appearance on local sports show The GOAT. Hence, the match was set for Wrevolution X, with the added stipulation that either result would mean that someone had to be fired. A Panzer win would send Montero packing from the FOX show, while a Sebastian victory would put an end to the tenure of PWR's GM.

Come Wrevolution X, it was about as insane as you'd expect. While Sy and Montero had some fun brawls, Panzer and Sebastian put on a very memorable bout in the ring. Panzer appeared to have the match in control at one point, but a timely interference from Montero proved too big a distraction, and minutes later Sebastian would pick up the win after a nasty Killshot. Thus, Montero got to stay on his show, while Mr. Sy woud have to go find another job.

Overall edge: Chris Panzer has got something to prove here. He had Sebastian in the bag at Wrevolution X, were it not for the antics of Montero that proved too big a distraction. With Montero's bet done, we doubt that he'll be in Sebastian's corner again to keep things unfair. Of course, the Royal Flush will always be a looming threat to interfere, but Panzer should see it coming this time around and plan accordingly. He knows he can win this match, so look for him to ensure that Wrevolution X does not happen again.

Our Analysis & Predictions

This is honestly a tough match to call. On one hand, we'd love to see Chris Panzer get his due. He's been in big championship matches before, but has always fallen short, and this might be another way he can shoot for glory once more. He should also now be used to Sebastian's antics, and should be able to plan accordingly to win and become the #1 contender for the PWR Championship. More importantly, though, we're sure he feels remorse, given that he was involved in the fracas that led to the firing of Mr. Sy. Perhaps that will be what motivates him to improve on his previous result.

On the other hand, John Sebastian just keeps winning, and we find it very hard to think that PWR Live: The ShawDown will be any different. Sebastian seems on the verge of ascending to the PWR Championship scene, and a win here would put him on the path to doing that against the popular new champion, Jake De Leon. Don't forget—Sebastian's debut match was against the Senyorito, and we're pretty sure he hasn't forgotten about that bitter welcome to the PWR he suffered from that career-opening defeat.

Thus, expect a hotly contested and highly emotional match. Both men are very familiar with each other's in-ring style at this point so they might need to find new forms of offense to catch the other off guard.

Smark Henry prediction: John Sebastian wins and becomes the #1 Contender to Jake De Leon's PWR Championship.

*****

PWR Live: The ShawDown is happening on Saturday, July 30, at the 500 Shaw Zentrum Events Pavilion.
