The Grapevine (7/11/16): The Beast And The Viper

Good morning, and this is your daily Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the weekend.

One of the biggest matches on SummerSlam entered the radar with a whimper. Here's why:

  • WWE quietly announced Randy Orton vs. Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam last week so that UFC can promote it on UFC 200. The UFC ran a full commercial for SummerSlam advertising both the PPV and the match, so this is what the WWE was going for even though it was too early to announce Orton vs. Lesnar (considering possible booking plans depending on the outcome of the fight). As of now, the feud hasn't been built up on TV yet. (Source: WrestlingInc)

We say: It's half-smart and half-assed, indicative of Vince McMahon's penchant for short-term boosts over sensible long-term gains. Yeah, you got the big announcement at a perfect PPV, where Brock Lesnar won (after spending years back in the fake rasslin' business) but at the expense of a proper build and booking logic. People aren't even sure they're hyped for the match yet.

  • It's possible that Hideo Itami will be sticking around in NXT to help provide depth on the roster. A lot of huge NXT talents, from Bayley to Finn Balor to even Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe, are rumored to be heading up to the main roster via the Draft. (Source: Daily Wrestling News)

We say: This is something we can buy, although we don't think Nakamura and Joe are leaving that soon. It's possible, but they still need to transition.
