#ThemeSongTuesday (8/2/16): Burn Your 'Enemies' To The Ground

The position of “Monday Night RAW theme song” has always been a tricky one in terms of how well it's received. We’ve had songs praised for being the perfect mix of angsty and fun (Across The Nation), and themes lambasted to musical hell for being written by Nickelback (Burn It To The Ground). With the new era rolling in and themes to go along with it, it’s time for another RAW theme review on #ThemeSongTuesday!

WWE returns to using previously released music for RAW’s new era theme with “Enemies”, by hard rock band Shinedown from their fourth studio album “Amaryllis”. A hard, heavy wall of sound opens up the track with a striding beat you’d expect to hear blasting from a Mad Max war rig.

Surprisingly, the overall reception for this new theme has been great! Not only is it favored for its ability to PUMP US ALL UP and the somewhat substantial lyrical content, it is liked for being fresh; a strange word to associate “Enemies” with, to be honest. Take another listen and right off the bat, you'll hear the similarities to previous RAW theme “Burn It To The Ground”. Sorry, by similarities, I mean it sounds like the exact same song.

From the identical riffs to Shinedown lead singer Brent Smith channeling his inner-Chad Kroeger, “Enemies” is pretty much the same theme from 2009. My question is: Why? You mean you’re telling me that WWE decided not to go in-house for the new era RAW theme—which is a big deal— and they landed on a song that sounds extremely similar to one they’ve had before? The product is vastly different, we’ve got new camera angles, new superstars, new everything; why not channel that through a new theme that differs from the ones that came before it?

An opportunity to capture the fresh, revamped energy WWE’s flagship show now emanates with a new theme has been lost. You’re better off skipping the intro, but thankfully, the three hours that follow these 40 seconds more than make up for it.
