Fenix May Have Left AAA

AAA's woes seem to know no end, as rumors are now breaking out that Fenix has officially left the promotion.

At a local lucha libre show in Mexico yesterday, Fenix turned heads when he came out as the surprise opponent of Mascara Dorada (otherwise known as WWE's Gran Metalik). After the match ended in a double countout, Fenix went on to announce that he is no longer affiliated with AAA, and that moving forward he will now be known as Rey Fenix.

Twitter user @luchablog, a well-respected source on lucha libre-related news and rumors, confirmed this yesterday:

It's worth noting that this has been brewing for quite some time now. Last month, AAA held TripleMania XXIV, which is considered to be its biggest show of the year. Fenix was then booked to team up with El Hijo de Fantasma (King Cuerno of Lucha Underground) to challenge for the tag team championships, but mysteriously failed to show up at the event and was immediately replaced. Soon after, rumors popped up that Fenix had some issues with AAA management, and this recent development does seem to point toward that.

As for where he'll be moving forward, some rumors indicate that he'll be working with Illinois-based promotion All American Wrestling (AAW). This seems to be a reasonable step to take, as Fenix has worked with them before. AAW has also worked with several AAA talents in the past, such as Aero Star, Drago, and Jack Evans.

Meanwhile, it's likely that Fenix will continue to work with Lucha Underground considering that Lucha Underground signs their own talents to contracts independent of AAA. It also isn't unheard of for talents who have left AAA to continue their involvement with Lucha Underground, as has been the case with Rey Mysterio Jr.
