The Grapevine (4/21/17): Who's Afraid Of The Big Lone Wolf?

Good morning, and this is your daily Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

Who's really going to be the top heel on SmackDown Live?

  • With all the news of Jinder Mahal becoming the #1 contender to the WWE Championship at Backlash, it turns out that Baron Corbin is the projected eventual top heel on SmackDown Live. WWE favors him more than they even do Braun Strowman on RAW, which may explain why Corbin was made to eliminate him at the Royal Rumble earlier this year. The reason why Mahal got the contendership is that they wanted to build Corbin up for later this year, which include new vignettes and possibly new theme music. (Source: WON)

We say: Whether it's Mahal or Corbin, it seems like SmackDown Live truly is the land of opportunity, and we can't wait to see his push in the future. We also hope they don't discard Jinder like an old toy after they're done using him to get Orton babyface reactions.

  • There has apparently been a small culture of ostracizing Mauro Ranallo in WWE. There had been people in the production room who had made fun of him, and JBL's Bring It To The Table rant about him winning Announcer of the Year had been something planned for the show ahead of time. On a slightly related note, Jerry Lawler had also taken to calling him "MR," which we all thought was a reference to Jim Ross's nickname, but somebody had pointed out to him that it used to mean "mental retard" in the '70s. Lawler had since stopped using the nickname after that. (Source: WON)

We say: Jesus Christ, people are terrible. We get not getting along with people whose behavior don't really jive with yours, but what a truly terrible culture they've got going on over there.
