The NXT Grapevine, May 2017

We're nearing the end of another month, which means it's once again time for NXT to tape its next set of episodes! With TakeOver: Chicago set to happen a month from now, it's time for NXT to set up the matches that will take place on their next big show.

Once again, we'll put our usual SPOILER WARNING here. The matches you'll see below have yet to be aired, so don't scroll down if you don't want to be spoiled. Also, these tapings sometimes go through heavy changes before the on-air product is released, so there may be matches and segments that won't be seen.

***START OF SPOILERS***

Airing on 5/3:
  • Killian Dain (w/ SAnitY) def. Danny Burch.
  • Heavy Machinery (Tucker Knight and Otis Dozovic) def. two local talents. After the match, Knight and Dozovic said that they wanted to go after the Authors of Pain next. The crowd was said to have enjoyed this.
  • Sonya Deville (formerly Daria Berenato) def. Lacey Evans.
  • Aleister Black def. Cezar Bononi.
Thoughts: Are Heavy Machinery challenging for the tag team championships immediately? It'll be interesting to see if they do given that DIY is still around, but that'll be one hell of a showdown between the big boys. Aleister Black's Murder Tour continues, and I'm interested to see why Daria's name was changed.

Airing 5/10:
  • #1 Contender's Match for the NXT Championship: Hideo Itami def. Roderick Strong. Both men embrace after the match, but Strong was attacked by SAnitY (Eric Young, Killian Dain, Alexander Wolfe and Nikki Cross) afterwards.
  • Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford def. Dylan Miley and Ho Ho Lun. Dawkins and Ford were introduced as a team, but it was not clear what they were called. Miley once again attacked his partner after the match.
  • Drew McIntyre def. Sean Maluta. Afterwards, Drew was interviewed and he said that he's caught the attention of one Wesley Blake. McIntyre challenged Blake to a match.
  • Kassius Ohno def. Andrade 'Cien' Almas. Thea Trinidad was at ringside trying to catch Almas' attention, but looked disgusted when he lost.
Thoughts: This is it! Hideo's finally, finally getting a shot at the NXT Championship, and I'm already excited having just read that because it's about damn time. Strong's eventually going to get there, though for now he has to pick up Tye Dillinger's burden of having to deal with Eric Young and the rest of SAnitY. McIntyre vs. Blake is a bit out of left field though, considering we haven't even seen Blake lately. Almas continues his losing streak to known names, while Dylan Miley continues his streak of attacking his partners.

Also, holy shit, Angelo Dawkins just won a match! Has he finally moved on to something?

Airing 5/17:
  • DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) come out and challenge the Authors of Pain to a one-on-one rematch at TakeOver: Chicago for the NXT Tag Team Championship. Tino Sabbatelli and Riddick Moss come out, and a match was set up between the two teams.
  • DIY def. Tino Sabbatelli and Riddick Moss. NXT GM William Regal came out afterwards, and announced that DIY would receive their rematch against the Authors of Pain at TakeOver: Chicago in a Ladder Match!
  • NXT Champion Bobby Roode came out and provoked Hideo Itami. Itami came out for a fight, but was stopped by William Regal and a bunch of security guards. Itami took out the guards and then laid out Roode with a GTS before leaving.
  • #1 Contender's Battle Royale for the NXT Women's Championship:
    • Participants: Ember Moon, Peyton Royce, Billie Kay, Nikki Cross, Ruby Riot, Aliyah, Liv Morgan, Sonya Deville, Kimberley Frankele, Lacey Evans, Rachael Ellering, Victoria Gonzalez, Bianca Blair and Candice LeRae.
    • LeRae came out to a huge pop from the crowd!
    • Ember Moon was said to have injured herself after hitting her shoulder against the guardrail on a suicide dive.
    • The final three ended up being Ember Moon, Nikki Cross and Ruby Riot. Before the match could finish, NXT Women's Champion Asuka came out and attacked all three. The match was declared a no contest, which led to William Regal announcing Asuka vs. Nikki Cross vs. Ruby Riot vs. Ember Moon for the NXT Women's Championship at TakeOver: Chicago!
Thoughts: Clearly, Regal hasn't learned from Samoa Joe's antics as his security still sucks. A ladder match for the Tag Team Championship actually sounds fun, and it'll be a sight to see how the Authors of Pain make use of all those weapons around them to try and keep their belts.

The big news here, though, is the arrival of Candice LeRae! It's been on the rumor mills for quite some time now, and with her showing up on NXT there's a good chance we see her in the upcoming Women's Tournament. Batshit insane Asuka sounds fun to watch, although that injury to Ember Moon is a huge bummer. Let's hope that she recovers in time for TakeOver: Chicago, because that four-way women's match looks like it can steal the show.

So, to recap, here's what seems to be set for TakeOver: Chicago:

  • NXT Championship Match: Hideo Itami vs. Bobby Roode (c)
  • Fatal Four-way for the NXT Women's Championship: Ember Moon vs. Nikki Cross vs. Ruby Riot vs. Asuka (c)
  • Ladder Match for the NXT Tag Team Championship: DIY vs. The Authors of Pain (c)

We're also likely to get a match between Roderick Strong and SAnitY, though we're not yet sure if it'll involve other people like the last time. It's also unsure if the Drew McIntyre-Wesley Blake match is set for TakeOver: Chicago, since it never happened in this set of tapings. Aleister Black, Kassius Ohno and Andrade 'Cien' Almas also don't seem to have anything yet, so expect these guys in their own matches once the show comes.
