#MustWatchMonday: Cody (Rhodes) vs. Christopher Daniels, ROH Best in the World 2017

On June 23, Ring of Honor held its annual Best in the World iPPV, with this year being headlined by a match between the "American Nightmare" Cody (Rhodes withheld for copyright reason) and the ROH World Champion Christopher Daniels. This was Cody's second attempt at winning the championship, the first being a loss in a three-way match that featured these two men and Jay Lethal.

Cody has been portraying an anti-ROH heel for most of his tenure with the company after initially debuting as a babyface. In this match, Christopher Daniels, one of the ROH originals, defends the honor of the company by putting his title on the line.

It is important to note that Cody has an upcoming IWGP Heavyweight Championship match against Kazuchika Okada at the G1 specials that will be held in Long Beach California, so it was of utmost importance that Cody enter that match looking as credible as possible. This match was a means to that end. He goes back and forth with Christopher Daniels throughout the entire match though some shenanigans were sprinkled in between control sequences, a notable one being Marty Scurll trying to run interference.

It was apparent that Cody considered this match as more of a stepping stone for his ascension, as he used the Rainmaker on Daniels to taunt Okada. This really played well into his anti-ROH persona.

In the end, despite taking a huge bump through a table, and despite Daniels being able to overcome all the shenanigans that came his way, Cody hit two Cross Rhodes to win the championship. This is his first major league world championship since he started his career in 2006, and to be honest, it probably won't be his last.

This raises the stakes for his match against Okada at Long Beach, as the match is now champion vs. champion, and I for one cannot wait.

What did you think of the match? Are you excited for Cody vs. Okada at the G1 special event in Long Beach? Leave a comment!
