The NXT Grapevine, June-July 2017

It's been a month since NXT Takeover: Chicago, and we're going off a month of so-so NXT tapings. (That is, of course, save for this week's episode with the kickass Aleister Black/Kassius Ohno main event.) This month, the road to NXT Takeover: Brooklyn 3 continues, Mauro Ranallo officially debuts on the show, and there's at least one important debut.

Once again, we'll put our usual SPOILER WARNING here. The matches you'll see below have yet to be aired, so don't scroll down if you don't want to be spoiled. Also, these tapings sometimes go through heavy changes before the on-air product is released, so there may be matches and segments that won't be seen.

***START OF SPOILERS***

Airing June 28:
  • Velveteen Dream def. Ho Ho Lun.
  • Hideo Itami vs. Oney Lorcan ends in a no contest after Itami's nose gets busted open.
  • Vanessa Borne (formerly known as Danielle Kamella) def. Jayme Hachey (formerly known as Jayme Jaymeson) to qualify for the Mae Young Classic.
  • Hideo Itami def. Oney Lorcan in a rematch from the match earlier. (This may be the match to be aired.)
  • No Way Jose def. Cezar Bononi
  • Asuka (c) def. Nikki Cross in a Last Woman Standing match to retain the NXT Women's Championship.
Thoughts: The Itami/Lorcan match is unusual in that they re-did it again, and it remains to be seen whether the first match will be aired. Regardless, we're glad to know that Itami's nose injury isn't bad enough to keep him away from the ring.

Airing July 5:
  • Ember Moon def. Ruby Riot
  • SAnitY (Alexander Wolfe and Killian Dain) def. the team of Hideo Itami and Kassius Ohno. The two have words with each other again after the match, and Ohno walks out on Itami.
  • Oney Lorcan def. Danny Burch
  • Bobby Roode (c) def. Roderick Strong to retain the NXT Championship. Strong's wife Marina Shafir was at ringside.
Thoughts: Interesting that they don't carry the Roode/Strong title feud all the way to Takeover, but honestly, that's the way it should be done. We don't need to wait two to three months between Takeovers to get nice title matches. Considering NXT's roster is really stacked at the moment, it's now the best time to strengthen the TV product and usher in a new golden age for NXT reminiscent of 2013-2014.

Airing July 12:
  • Aleister Black def. Bobby Fish in Fish's NXT debut.
  • The Authors of Pain (c) def. Heavy Machinery to retain the NXT Tag Team Championships.
  • Jeet Rama def. Johnny Vandal in Rama's NXT debut.
  • Drew McIntyre def. Killian Dain to become the new #1 contender to the NXT Championship.
Thoughts: Yo, two big matches with championship implications in the same episode? Bobby Fish debuting? You know this episode will be the one to watch next month. At this point, however, we're not sure if moving quickly to Drew McIntyre challenging Bobby Roode for the title is the best move, considering how well Roderick Strong is doing. We'd like to see a multi-man match for the title.
