The Grapevine (7/17/17): Masters of the Universe

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

The Grapevine is back after a week-long vacation, and we have some SummerSlam updates:

  • According to Sportskeeda, the new match for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam looks to be a fatal four-way with Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, and Samoa Joe. The plan, which was originally supposed to be a four-way with Seth Rollins and Finn Balor instead of Reigns and Joe, was rumored to be changed to Lesnar/Strowman, then to Lesnar/Reigns after Reigns's announcement on RAW a few weeks ago. (Source: Sportskeeda)

We say: This is Sportskeeda, so take this rumor with the whole shaker of salt. In any case, we'll find out what the deal is soon as Reigns and Joe are set to have a #1 contender match on RAW this week.

  • The plan for the United States Championship at SummerSlam is to have AJ Styles face John Cena once again. A rumored plan for AJ Styles was for him to face Shinsuke Nakamura, but now the WWE is scrapping those plans for now and shelving them for the future. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio)

We say: That's a shame, as we would've wanted a landmark Nakamura match, but it seems he's still busy being established in the brand. Not that there's anything wrong with Styles/Cena, but if SmackDown is the land of opportunity, they'd offer this (relatively) fresh NJPW matchup at the Smark WrestleMania.

  • Nikki Bella is also rumored to make a return at SummerSlam. The plan seems to be for Nikki to start wrestling again soon, and to begin that next run by making an appearance at the PPV. (Source: PWInsider)

We say: Assuming she's healthy enough to work, she would be a welcome addition to the low-key stacked SmackDown women's division. But if she's still dealing with nagging neck problems, perhaps it would be best for her to stay home. It really isn't worth risking her wellbeing for.

  • There are still some WWE officials who disapprove of some competitors in the Mae Young Classic. These people are apparently the kind of officials who believe that all women wrestlers in the WWE have to be good-looking. (Source: WON)

We say: It's only a matter of time until they die and/or go away, anyway, and as long as Triple H is in line for some sort of succession, the company will continue progressing.
