The Grapevine (2/9/18): Start Game

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

If you noticed that 205 Live is different, that's because it really is:

  • Triple H has been given control of 205 Live, and is expected to take over more of WWE as Vince McMahon prepares to relaunch the XFL. While Vince says the XFL won't take away from his duties in the WWE, it's not the same feeling backstage as Triple H is preparing to take more control, putting together a new team that reportedly includes Impact Wrestling alumnus Jeremy Borash. However, the 205 Live soft reboot is to help drive the brand to do better, and not a workload issue with Vince. (Source: PWInsider, WON)
We say: Honestly, we're all for this. Even though Triple H may not be the fairest figure in wrestling backstage, the whole TV product needs fresh blood overseeing things. The new-old 205 Live may not be immediately impactful, but it's already refreshing in the way it focuses on the action. Time will tell how he'll handle it after the Cruiserweight Championship tournament is over, but it does look a lot like NXT now.
  • Impact Wrestling has officially licensed its Hardys' #Broken Universe content to WWE. Right now, the content will reportedly be used for a WWE 24 episode and a DVD release about the brothers. Matt officially owns the rights to the Broken Universe now after reaching a deal with Anthem. WWE has done this previously with Ring of Honor for CM Punk and Daniel Bryan. (Source: WrestlingInc, PWInsider)
We say: Interesting. This probably paves the way for the rest of the universe (SeƱor Benjamin, Reby Hardy, Maxel, Vanguard-1, the dilapidated boat, etc.) to show up on WWE programming, and it's only a matter of time.
  • Part of why Ronda Rousey was signed to the WWE is apparently to help boost Stephanie McMahon's celebrity status outside of the company. The intent with the rumored WrestleMania match between Triple H and Stephanie McMahon versus Ronda Rousey and either the Rock or Kurt Angle is to make Steph a bigger star, second only to the casual drawing power Ronda will bring to the show. It's said that it's the same idea as Mike Tyson's involvement in WrestleMania helping make Vince McMahon a star outside the company. (Source: WON)
We say: ...Seriously?
