The MMC With Smark Henry (2/13/18): Lana Number One

It's been five weeks of the Mixed Match Challenge and we're finally almost wrapping up the first round. This week, Elias and Bayley give up their lives to make Lana look decent. Not even just "good," but "decent."

Yes, this week's matchup was really designed to get Rusev and Lana over so they can meet Jimmy Uso and Naomi in the third round or so, but I was surprised at just how much ring time Lana got here. Sure, it makes sense to start the match off with Lana and Bayley to establish the story of Lana's inexperience. But the finish involves Bayley falling to Lana by way of not even an actual finisher or anything, but a well-timed fall from the top rope.

I'm shaking my head at how lazy this move is; yes, it was a fluke and it was supposed to be a fluke, but they couldn't give Bayley (who's been working her ass off) enough respect to go down from an actual finishing move?

My issue with the whole Lana angle is that she better be doing enough to improve every week to deserve the spotlight. She didn't move terribly in her first WWE match back at WrestleMania 32, but she's been used so sparingly since then that we don't actually know how much better she is. Or if this is what she truly wants.

For now, she's fortunate that Rusev's magnetic enough to carry the both of them. I've got no issues with the Rusev/Elias parts as the Bulgarian Brute brought his usual self to the dance. Really hoping the next rounds of this tournament get more compelling (and run just a little longer).

Mixes and Matches

  • The lower brackets really have some pairings that really scream "enhancement talent." Which is funny, considering the upper half of SmackDown pairings were really solid.
  • Elias and Bayley kinda made their team work, even if they didn't have that much to run with.
