The MMC With Smark Henry: Finally, The Last Of Round 1

Hello, and welcome to the MMC With Smark Henry. If you've stuck with the Mixed Match Challenge 'til now, congratulations, we're finally done with the first round.

Like most things the WWE touches, the whole thing started out so well (if a little groundbreaking with the whole idea of an intergender tag team tournament), but it didn't take long for it to devolve into a more character-driven chore. As I've already mentioned in the first episode's review, a lot of the bite is taken away by the WWE's refusal to allow the women wrestle the men, limiting physical interactions to pin breakups and the occasional slap from the apron.

Anyway, this week's episode—featuring the Robe Warriors (Bobby Roode and Charlotte Flair, the only dual-champ team so far) versus Titus Worldwide Nia Jax and Apollo Crews—was pretty much just filler to get Roode and Charlotte to the next round.

There were really just two major plot points in this match:
  • Bobby Roode learning how to be Ric Flair from Ric Flair's daughter
  • Titus Worldwide trying to interfere too much with Nia Jax
What was an opportunity for some pretty solid wrestling from all four involved—and we know they can do some fun things in the ring—instead turned into story hijinks involving Nia Jax and Titus Worldwide. For some reason, they really wanted to push Nia's little spat with Titus, even going so far as to make a post-match angle out of it.

Really, though, who cares? Titus Worldwide's been losing some steam for a while, and that's not even their biggest concern as Titus and Apollo seem to be going after the RAW Tag Team Champions. I get that it was a story they tried to inject to make the match mean something, but I don't think it's what fans of the MMC were looking for.

Next week it's Boss Club vs. Awesuka and this should already be a better match because we're headed back to the RAW-dominated brackets. I hope y'all vote for MeowOh in the second chance voting, because I need some more Nakamura in my life. Anyway, if you're still interested go catch this week's episode up on the Network now.

Mixes and Matches

  • Why doesn't Bobby Roode understand that the "WOO!" is falsetto?
  • Hey Beth, Bull Nakano is from Japan, not China. Better take that back before someone gets on your case.
