The MMC With Smark Henry: Husbando and Waifu

This week's Mixed Match Challenge matchup is the first of the tournament that isn't a real money match, so they decided to switch things up a little by having the fans vote between the two General Managers to be the special referee.

That's the only real hook they had for a Jimmy Uso/Naomi and Goldust/Mandy Rose matchup—Daniel Bryan ended up being the referee, because who doesn't like Daniel Bryan—but the midcard teams did their best to make their bout entertaining. Let me tell you, if you're not sure why the WWE keeps Goldust around, it's because the veteran still knows how to pump up a crowd while doing little.

It worked, too. The opening sequence that saw both teams trying to top each other's affections for their partners got the crowd really involved, building up the first real move of the match. Imagine if they just straight up wrestled like they were supposed to—it wouldn't have been terrible, but it wouldn't have been interesting either.

The match itself was nothing to write home about, as it was really designed to put the a SmackDown Live team over for the first time in the whole tournament. The Blue Brand really needed it after a string of three straight losses; and it looks like they're building up to more after the other husband/wife team of Rusev and Lana showed up after the match to challenge the Usos.

We finally get a semblance of a bigger storyline happening outside of the single bouts every week, even though that kind of means the hodgepodge team of Elias and Bayley are gonna be losing to Rusev and Lana. I wish the MMC did a better job of building intrigue through the seedings and pairings, but here we are. Hey, it's all for charity anyway.

Mixes and Matches

  • This match had more intergender action, so it's not all average.
  • So the way the brackets are set up is that there are only three quarterfinal matches instead of four, with the fourth semifinal team being determined by a fan vote. This is probably where Nakamura/Natalya come back in, but at this point, if Rusev and Lana have to take on Jimmy Uso and Naomi, they're going to have to beat Bobby Roode and Charlotte. This is a strange tournament.
  • So strange, in fact, that you can really tell the bottom half of the seeds are all SmackDown's to take.
