The Grapevine (3/22/18): Turn That No Into A Yes

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

Exactly how did Daniel Bryan get cleared to compete?

  • According to the Walls of Jerichoholic Wrestling Blog, Daniel Bryan got medically cleared to compete as early as January 27 this year. He had to get cleared by Dr. Joseph Maroon, one of WWE's doctors who would insist on not clearing him; to do so, Bryan would have to get medical clearance from the US's top concussion experts, which he was able to get. It's being reported that Bryan was the most tested athlete in history.

Because he was able to get clearance as early as January, Bryan was naturally penciled in for a spot at WrestleMania—but WWE was still unsure of how to go about bringing him back on TV. The news started to leak this week, so WWE went ahead and broke the story on their site before having Bryan announce it himself on this week's episode of SmackDown Live. WWE eventually relented, most likely for two reasons: so that they can look good allowing Bryan to return, and so that he wouldn't leave to wrestle for another company, which he would have done this September if he wasn't cleared. At this point, it's being reported that Bryan wants to stay.

We say: This is great news, despite WWE wanting to spin it as a good deed on their end. We just hope Bryan really does take it easy on himself, knowing his history. We don't want him to follow in the footsteps of one Kota Ibushi.
  • Rey Mysterio is also heading back to WWE. He's headed to Alabama this week to check in with WWE doctors, perhaps to consult about his partial bicep tear. It's being reported that the injury did not stop the negotiations between him and WWE. (Source: PWInsider)
We say: Good, good. We'd still love to see Cena/Rey instead of Cena/Taker.
  • Big Cass was backstage on this week's RAW. Cass is apparently in the final stages of getting medically cleared to compete after tearing his ACL back in August. (Source: PWInsider)
We say: Great news for Big Cass, but we wonder how he'll fare now without Enzo Amore in the picture. We wonder if he'll be coming back with an entirely new gimmick.
