The Grapevine (5/11/18): A Tag Team Transaction

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

Are we getting a third Money in the Bank ladder match this year?

  • A Money in the Bank ladder match for a shot at either Tag Team Championship is in the works. There were plans for Kurt Angle to announce all three matches, but those plans were apparently changed at the last minute before RAW went on the air. This may explain why there are three briefcases featured on the event poster and why some tag teams have been tweeting videos about winning briefcases. The match will likely be announced soon, and WWE reportedly figured they don't have to announce it yet with six weeks left until the event. (Source: Wrestling Observer Live)
We say: This... actually makes sense, and gets a lot of people on the card. We've always maintained that Money in the Bank is the only new themed PPV that deserved to be added to the Big Four pantheon of shows.
  • Speaking of Money in the Bank, WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar is not scheduled to defend the title on the show. There's no word yet on when his next defense will be, but if his current contract expires right before SummerSlam, he'll only have Extreme Rules on July 15 as the next big event in which to defend it. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio)
We say: Interesting. That means Reigns will likely be added to the men's Money in the Bank ladder match at the last minute, and Lesnar will probably sign a new short contract extension to wrestle at SummerSlam.
  • And speaking of Roman Reigns, WWE is reportedly trying to have him be an underdog in order to get him cheers. They're apparently trying the Daniel Bryan route, in which it seems like management is favoring Brock Lesnar. The company is still trying it even though it's clear that the audience isn't believing it. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio)
We say: No. This isn't working. There's a reason why Bryan's underdog story worked, and it's because management really wasn't favoring him at the time. Doing the same for Reigns is only going to hold him back further.
  • Charlotte is currently working through a minor breast implant rupture. She apparently suffered the rupture before WrestleMania, but decided to work through it and postpone the required surgery to after the current European tour to make it to SummerSlam. She will probably do an angle removing her from the women's Money in the Bank ladder match for which she qualified on this week's episode of SmackDown Live. (Source: WON)
We say: Looks like it's not so bad if she can work through all of this. You strong, Charlotte. You strong.
