The Grapevine (7/13/18): A Crystal Classic?

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

Are we getting a Filipina wrestler on this year's Mae Young Classic?
  • PWR wrestler Crystal is reportedly appearing on this year's Mae Young Classic, according to PWInsider. However, we spoke with her about the rumor and Crystal claims that it isn't true. The first women confirmed for the tournament, however, are former WWE superstar Kaitlyn, who is making her comeback after leaving the company in 2014, and Australian NXT wrestler Rhea Ripley. We say: We're putting the Crystal news up here because you should take the news from both sides with a grain of salt—while the news isn't always true, it seems a little strange that a dirtsheet would specifically report on a rumor involving Crystal, and we could always be thrown off the scent. It's not over 'til everyone's announced. Meanwhile, Kaitlyn returning to WWE is news we like, as the women's division could always use a powerhouse and her career was far from over when she retired.
  • Brock Lesnar is apparently confirmed to show up at SummerSlam next month. His opponent isn't confirmed yet, although the long-held plans were always rumored to be a Universal Championship match against Roman Reigns. Brock wasn't mentioned at all on RAW this Monday, despite appearing at last Saturday's UFC 226 and confronting newly-crowned UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier. That's reportedly a Vince McMahon directive, insisting that the company make it look like Brock has turned his back on them and leaving for the UFC while still Universal Champion, which would also make Roman Reigns look like a hero. We say: You know... this story would have worked in a different era, as late as the early-to-mid 2000s. It just doesn't work anymore in the age of the internet and dirtsheet, where everyone has their own opinion and there are people like Dave Meltzer breaking stories down as they happen. News like this just isn't going to help Reigns's case.
  • The Jay White/Juice Robinson spot that injured Jim Ross and caused Josh Barnett to storm the ring was completely unplanned. Jim Ross did suffer some sort of rib injury, and Barnett chased White after the Knife Pervert taunted him. The two wrestlers did apologize to JR and Barnett after the match, which they accepted. (Source: The Ross Report, via Wrestling Inc)
We say: At least we all know that it was an accident, but it's a shame that JR had to get hurt along the way. Be careful, wrestlers.
