The MMC With Smark Henry (10/16/18): Like Clockwork

The second season of the WWE Mixed Match Challenge has reached the midpoint mark of the group stage and the favorites are starting to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.
Country Dominance made it two-for-two, beating a Team Pawz in transition after Bobby Roode replaced an injured Kevin Owens, while season one victors Awe-Ska kept their streak alive after defeating Ravishing Rusev Day.

As has been the trend, the side that takes the match more seriously usually ends up with the win. So, it was a harbinger when Natalya put the cat ears headband on Bobby Lashley and "The Dominator" proceeded to remove it and stomp on it, much to the chagrin of the WWE's cat lady.

Although this is the first time Natty and Roode paired up, there is more synergy between the two (but we have to agree that Owens was
initially included for Mic'd Up highlights). This became more apparent when Natalya pointed out in the pre-show interview that Roode likes cats and when Michael Cole mentioned that he is a Bret Hart fan. Or maybe it's just face Roode being a face.

Despite that, I find it hard to see them winning against Finn-Bayley (why isn't this their team name?) and being winless themselves, it's difficult to call on who would come out on top between Pawz and Mahalicia, although by that time it would just be a battle for pride.

Now for some main show crossover observations. WWE creative writes off Owens and Sasha Banks due to "injury" but can't do the same to Charlotte Flair and Liv Morgan because the storyline dictates they be "at full health"?

Hindsight is 20/20, yes. But if they were going to give Owens time off, whether it's due to a legit injury or
to just take a rest, then why didn't they extend his kayfabe "retirement" longer and come back to a much bigger payoff down the line? His current gimmick where he was supposed to be given carte blanche by constable Baron Corbin to do stuff was wasted when KO got fed to a heel-turning Lashley just so the unabashed Shania Twain fan gets to be written TV.

Unless the long game was to turn the former TNA champ heel by injuring the Yep Movement. Then that makes Owens quitting for a week a cheap, cheap pop and a weak transition from his feud with Braun Strowman to a new angle. I'll take Mick Foley pandering to the home crowd than that bait and switch.

That out of the way, SmackDown bookers redeemed themselves this week with both camps on equal footing heading into their MMC encounter. Earlier, The Miz advanced to the World Cup tournament, beating Rusev with ease due to Aiden English's distraction.

The highlight of this match was when the married couple, Asuka, and The Miz had the audience cheer for them and it was only the latter who got booed while the others received pops. To the amazement and disappointment of the "A-Lister," it was his teammate who garnered the loudest roars from the crowd.

In the end, winning chemistry prevailed over couple power as The Miz' misdirection (Miz-direction, anyone?) let the former Women's Champion lock her finisher on Lana.

I'm calling it now. There would be no surprise wins and both groups' teams' win-loss records would end up in descending order (4-0, 3-1, 2-2, etc).

Mixes and Matches

  • Last season, not last year! You're tearing me apart, Kayla!
  • That "Bobby-off" where the female members of each team had the crowd chanting "Bobby! Bobby!" gave me a chuckle.
  • Natalya was tapping during a rest hold early in the match. As per Baron Corbin logic, shouldn't she have taken a loss there?
  • Only Rusev can get away calling The Miz with his shoot first name.
  • "We will lose!" said faux Miz and quasi-Asuka in their short Facebook promo. Foreshadowing much, Mr and Mrs Rusev?
  • Over at the live comments section, R-Truth asked how Asuka could see through the glasses and the mask. That's a life question worth pondering.
  • Was Rusev narrating John Cena's entrance theme lyrics to Lana while they were on the aisle?
  • Although we would like to see badass-Ka more regularly, fun Asuka is entertaining. In short, we just want more Asuka on the ring.
  • Lana-rooni. Trademark this.
  • There's one thing Ravishing Rusev Day can do that Awe-Ska can't: share a kiss.
  • Maybe Aiden should consider hiring Miz as a voice double after the latter's imitation of him.
