#ThemeSongTuesday: Welcome To Slamtown!

Johnny Mundo has become my favorite wrestler to follow since he entered the Survivor community as a contestant on Survivor: David vs. Goliath. He's gotten so over within this brave new world that people love him as a character and Slamtown as a gimmick. I've been covering this all season long on our special John Hennigan column called "Survivor" Series. But if you want to see firsthand how over Slamtown has become, look no further than the numerous song parodies Survivor fans have written and recorded as part of "The Wandoff," a popular segment on Rob Has A Podcast hosted by Survivor alum Rob Cesternino and reality TV writer Josh Wigler.

With all the love Slamtown and Johnny Mundo have gotten lately from Survivor, it's easy to forget how this all began. I originally wrote about this song on Sports Illustrated Philippines when the song came out in December 2016, but now that the website's dead, I might as well write about it here on Smark Henry.

So for #ThemeSongTuesday, I felt it was right to put the spotlight on the song that gave birth to this wonderful gimmick.

What you just watched above is the music video for "Welcome To Slamtown," which was recorded in the style of music videos from the 90s and 2000s, where behind-the-scenes footage involving the artist in the recording studio is included for candid effect.

The song itself sounds like a stadium anthem from the get-go. The hard riffs and drum beat build up to the hook, where the Mayor of Slamtown himself welcomes you to Slamtown! It's a bombastic theme that exudes the swagger and bravado that Johnny Mundo carries himself with, whether he portrays himself as a hero or as a villain. It's the type of theme that can rile up an entire arena because of how attention-grabbing it is.

Johnny Mundo himself performs the track with backup vocals that may or may not be recorded by him, too. Mundo isn't terrible on this track, even flexing his singing chops a bit when he tries to hit the high notes towards the end. For what it's worth, he has enough range to carry the song through the most powerful parts. The fact that he himself is performing his own song adds to the conceit of the Johnny Mundo character, which is an added layer that makes the song great.

As you can see with the lyrics below, they didn't have to be written by a prolific songwriter like Sia or Kendrick Lamar. The rhymes are pretty basic, and that could very well be by design. After all, if you've got your head so far up your ass that you think your own music and lyrics will sound awesome when you yourself record it, then you've got the perfect arrogant heel—which was the character Johnny Mundo rolled with in Lucha Underground when this song came out a little less than two years ago.

Welcome to Slamtown!
You're going down, going down, going down, going down.
This is my world, it's my domain,
You're all just here to entertain.
I make the rules,
I am the king,
You try but I will always win.
I'm what you're waiting for,
The American
luchador.
I've climbed the mountain, earned the fame,
The crowd is screaming out my name.

If you desire to walk into the fire,
Welcome to Slamtown!

I am the center, I'm the soul,
You're all just under my control.
Inside the ropes, under the lights,
You will be fighting for your life.
I am the main attraction,
You're just here for distraction.
Step in the ring,
Just understand, I'm number one,
I am the maaaNNNNNNN.

If you desire to walk into the fire,
Welcome to Slamtown!
Welcome to Slamtown!
Welcome to Slamtown!

Welcome to Slamtown, b*tches.

"Welcome To Slamtown" is an absolute gem, and I'm really glad that more and more people are discovering the song, Johnny Mundo, and the Slamtown gimmick thanks to his time on Survivor. If you haven't given this track a listen yet, then you're clearly missing out. Do yourself a favor and get out of Wimpville. WELCOME TO SLAMTOWN, BITCHES!
