The Grapevine (2/1/19): Goodbye, Dear Fringe

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the week. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

Here's what we know about Dean Ambrose's upcoming departure:
  • Dean Ambrose turned down a lucrative seven-figure, five-year deal from the WWE. Ambrose, whose contract expires in April after WrestleMania, is reportedly unhappy with how he's being used and does not care about the money he'll be getting if he decided to stay. Very few people were apparently aware of his decision to leave, and some still think the departure is a work from the way WWE announced it on their website. (Source: Wrestling Observer Radio)
We say: So much speculation swirling around Dean's decision to leave, and maybe the simplest answer really is the best. Still, however, we can't get over the fact that it's such a weird move for WWE to announce it like that.
  • On a related note, WWE officials had been trying to lock some talent in new contracts backstage on SmackDown. These were primarily wrestlers whose contracts would be up in the next two years. (Source: PWInsider)
We say: Really interesting to see the company panic-buying like that; maybe they should figure out who they really need first before doing this? Just a thought. They're prone to locking down talent which they wouldn't really have a use for, so perhaps it's all right to let some people go if they need or want to.
  • The current plan for the WrestleMania main event is Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey for the RAW Women's Championship. However, it's still possible that Charlotte Flair gets added to the match. (Source: Sports Illustrated)
We say: We hope they realize that Becky/Ronda is all they need for a fire main event.
