Smark Hen-XT (2/27/19): #DIY All Over Again

It has finally happened. Hell has frozen over. After months of feuding back and forth, #DIY is officially back together on NXT. While they've made appearances over the past week on both RAW and SmackDown without any explanation regarding their rivalry, the night's opening promo helped flesh out the story of the tag team's reunion. Kudos to the writers for adapting and for evolving the storyline especially when it was previously rumored that the NXT call-ups to the main brands were unplanned.

The episode started with a strong promo from Johnny Gargano explaining how he felt after losing the NXT North American Championship to the Velveteen Dream. For a second there, we actually related a little with good old Johnny. Imagine winning your first singles title, then, losing it on your first defense? It's so easy to feed your self-doubt in this situation and I personally felt sorry for him again even after he traversed into heel territory previously.

Cue Tommaso Ciampa.

Ciampa played the heel perfectly by preying on Johnny's insecurities. In hamming it up on a disappointed Gargano, the champ was able to open the avenue for an official reformation and entry of #DIY into the upcoming Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, which would guarantee the winners a shot at the NXT Tag Team Championships.

I didn't expect their relationship to end up like this. Johnny Wrestling falling right back into the champ's manipulating hands looks like a weird misstep but it does feel right after already seeing them team up recently. Surprisingly, the fans seemed to love the two together so we'll have to wait and see how everything falls into place before concluding.

Meanwhile, in the main event, we saw Shayna Baszler face off against Mia Yim. This was another great match from Shayna and it was definitely worthy of being the night's show-ender. It actually makes sense that they'd work well together as Yim and Shayna actually have had a storied history not just in the ring, but out of it as well.

Matches like this are what make NXT an enjoyable alternative as they allow the performers to craft a highly believable wrestling bout and storyline which doesn't feel forced or rushed. I would welcome a rematch between the two in the future as they looked comfortable working with each other.

All in all, tonight was excellent in terms of story, however, apart from the one-on-one women's match, I would've wanted to see more substance in the other matches. The bouts featured on this night weren't too remarkable, hence, I think the grade for tonight is balanced.
Grade: B

Not-So-Full-Sails

  • Similar to the #DIY reunion, it's great to see NXT aim for continuity by giving a legitimate reason for Ricochet and Aleister Black to team-up by having them be part of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic as they target the Undisputed ERA.
  • When was the last time we saw Candice LeRae wrestle? It's great seeing her be part of the main NXT storyline but can we see her in more matches, please? It's been a while.
  • The women's tag team match between Aliyah/Vanessa Borne and Taynara Conti/Xia Li felt like filler material but I guess this could eventually tie into Sasha Banks and Bayley's announcement later in the night.
  • Keith Lee versus Dominik Dijakovic ended in a no-contest. I just hope this feud doesn't end up like that Bull Dempsey/Baron Corbin one from a few years back that ended up hurting Dempsey's character and ultimately led to him being released.
  • Sasha Banks and Bayley's announcement was awesome. It's exciting that we'll eventually see the Women's Tag Team Champions be defended at a TakeOver event, however, part of me feels it's NXT's way of giving Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke a title shot. It's a good opportunity for the Four Horsewomen (of WWE) versus Four Horsewomen of MMA feud but as we've adamantly stated in the past, Shafir and Duke aren't ready for that main event exposure just yet.
Are you happy that #DIY is joining the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic? Did you enjoy the chemistry between Mia Yim and Shayna Baszler? What did you think of Sasha Banks and Bayley's declaration of defending the championships on all three brands? Send us your thoughts in the comments section below.
