Live From the 205 (6/25/19): Hit the Ground Running

Nowadays, it usually takes a couple of weeks for 205 Live to set its next PPV storyline. They'll hem and haw for a little bit, showcase the other talents that aren't getting that PPV spot and climax their storylines, and then lock in the title match a couple of weeks before that Sunday.

This time, however, they've wasted no time establishing the title match for Extreme Rules next month. I mean, it was obvious that former champion Tony Nese was going to get his shot at new champ Drew Gulak again, but I appreciate that they took the extra time to make the rematch make sense, especially in light of automatic clauses not being a thing in 2019 WWE. That's certainly saying much more than RAW and SmackDown.

I just found it a little strange that they focused back on Nese's wish to have this original match against Tozawa, which shouldn't be that high up in his list of priorities now that he's lost the title. I will, say, though, that this bout is the best the Premiere Athlete's looked in a long time, which could be attributed to the fact that this was the match he wanted.

Circling back to how 205 Live's hit the ground running when it comes to the build toward Extreme Rules, it's definitely a good thing that there's a concrete plan in place. Guys like Cedric Alexander and Buddy Murphy might be gone (and missing the competitive atmosphere of the show) but for the first time since WrestleMania week, the show's finally not lost without them. That's huge.

205 Live 6/25/19 Final Grade: A solid Jack Gallagher/Mike Kanellis match with an intriguing storyline, an entertaining Humberto Carrillo squash, and a fire main event? Start catching this show again. A-

      Short stops

      • I'm starting to wonder what the real payoff for Kanellis's bad luck is, if it isn't clearly going to be a feud with Drake Maverick. Drake was back on the show doing his job (somehow rehabilitating himself from his deranged 24/7 Championship chase), so what's the real endgame here? I'm not sure I like a storyline I can't predict.
      • Is it just me, or are they leaving money on the table not having Humberto Carrillo as a heel? He'd do so well being asshole pretty boys with Angel Garza.
      • Why is the Lucha House Party's solution to everything a tornado tag match? Not that I'm complaining, just really curious.
