The Grapevine (6/7/19): Terrible Attitudes

Good morning, and this is the Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the week. Remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

Does WWE want to bring back the Attitude Era?

  • Mick Foley has revealed that the WWE is trying to experiment with the Attitude Era on RAW. He explains in an interview on Busted Open Radio that the third hour is apparently going to be "more unpredictable." This is in line with recent efforts to revive ratings for the show, which included trying out a darker look for the third hour which seems to have been dropped as of this week's episode. We say: How about they just, we dunno, tell better stories? Stop panicking and tell better stories. That's really it.
  • Double or Nothing did around 98,000-113,000 PPV buys. Most of the buys came from the US, with the UK coming in second, followed by Australia, Germany, and Canada. What's even more notable is that the overall buys were close to being even between TV and online streaming. (Source: WON)
We say: For a show with a pretty high price point (compared to major wrestling streaming services in 2019) those are some pretty good numbers. AEW is off to a strong start, and they've got something good to build on.
  • WWE is now offering five-year contracts to new NXT talent. The company is now becoming more aggressive in signing independent names thanks to the efforts of rival companies such as AEW, and the new five-year setup means they're trying to lock them in for longer and preventing talents from slipping to competitors. (Source: WON)
We say: It's a trap, at least if your career trajectory sees a main roster call-up. Wrestlers will do what they want, but let's just hope WWE is paying them right for such a long contract.
