Live From the 205 (7/30/19): Kanellose

Hello, mga ka-205 Live, and welcome back to another edition of this column right after missing last week's. We've got two episodes of the show to cover, so let's dive right into the important stuff:
  • The biggest news, of course, is that Mike Kanellis's losing streak continues. That means his emasculation at the hands of his own wife continues. I came into this week's episode thinking, really thinking he was finally going to score a win over non-competitor Drake Maverick—mostly because Mike absolutely needed that win (even though that title shot against Drew Gulak wouldn't have made much sense). Here we are, the hole he's in getting even deeper.

The thing about stories like these is when it's the WWE, you never know if they have a plan to bail the star out. This isn't like NJPW where a spiraling losing streak angle can veritably result in things turning around for the guy. I'm just scared they'll damage a decent talent in Mike Kanellis beyond repair.

  • On that note, we don't have a clear contender for Drew Gulak. SummerSlam is next weekend already, and in a rare occurrence, 205 Live hasn't been building up anyone to take on Gulak at the big summerfest. This is in huge contrast to the past couple of months, where there were logical stories surrounding the title; now it feels like everything except the championship has been given time.
  • It could've been Humberto Carrillo, but it looks like Lucha House Party—Lince Dorado, specifically—will be feuding with him. I like the little wrinkle they introduced in this week's episode, clearly defining the Golden Lynx as someone who isn't just another generic luchador in the stable. (He's been called the hot-headed one before, it's just that they haven't really explored that much.) But this whole angle makes it clear that Humberto isn't going to be the guy against Gulak.
The show is chugging along really well, having been on a roll the past three weeks. I just don't know how they'll pull something out of the hat in time for SummerSlam with most of their big stories out of the way. Bad scheduling, or lack of foresight? We won't know.

205 Live 7/30/19 Final Grade: Aside from Mike Kanellis losing yet again, I can't really complain about this week's episode. The main event was more a prolonged beatdown than it was an in-ring classic, so catch the episode just for Dorado/Daivari. B+

      Short stops

      • I'm glad that the show's discovered they can do three medium-length matches in one episode instead of two longform bouts or the two long-one squash format. That should be able to build a lot of people every week.
      • How is Mike Kanellis going to be physically superior than Drake Maverick, dominate him for the whole match, and still lose to a fluke Dudley Dog spot? I felt like Mike looked too good to have him lose just like that. I don't know. I'm kind of salty about it because he put in too much work for things to still not go his way.
